In League of Legends players assume the role of a summoner that controls their champion with unique abilities and takes part in a 5-on-5 battle against a team of other players. The goal is usually to destroy the opposing team's 'nexus', a structure which lies at the heart of a base protected by defensive towers. Each League of Legends match begins with all champions starting off fairly weak but they increase their strength by accumulating items and experience over the course of the match.

Since 2011 Riot Games has hosted the annual League of Legends World Championship, where 16 professional teams compete for the champion title and $1,000,000 in prize money. Apart from the World Championship, Riot Games is also hosting the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) – two professional eSports leagues. In LCS twenty teams compete in separate leagues in North America and Europe, ten teams per each region. Both leagues are split into two parts, one “split” is held in the spring and one in the summer.
